Saxophonist David Sanborn To Be Featured At Jazz Series
Saxophonist David Sanborn will be featured during the 2009-2010 jazz series at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in South Orange, NJ, organizers have announced. Sanborn, a fixture of the New York jazz scene, will perform January 28. Sanborn released his first solo album, Taking Off, in 1975. Today, Sanborn remains one of the most respected and imitated saxophonists in smooth jazz. His latest CD, the 23rd of his Grammy Award-winning career, is Here and Gone.
Smooth jazz saxophonists frequently say they’ve been influenced by Sanborn’s style. But Sanborn – who begins a four-night stand today, October 22, at Yoshi’s Jazz Club in San Francisco – himself has trouble defining exactly what that style is. “For the life of me, I couldn’t tell you what it is. I mean, I was trying to sound like other people. I was trying to sound like Hank Crawford, or Fathead Newman. So, you know, when somebody ascribes a style or a sound to me, it’s like, oh OK, but for the life of me I couldn’t tell you what that is.”
Also featured in the series will Luis Bonila, Jazz ‘n the Hall, the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, the Manhattan Transfer, Dianne Reeves, and the Seton Hall University Jazz Ensemble.
