Spencer Day Brings Down The House At Hollywood Showcase

Spencer DayThere are few new artists these days as exciting as young vocalist Spencer Day. Day’s major-label debut, Vagabond, on Concord Jazz, is his third overall and continues to show his songwriting and vocal maturity.

Bonny Chick, director of affiliate relations for Broadcast Architecture, on Wednesday, November 4, had a chance to catch Day as he performed at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood. Among the songs he sang was “Till You Come to Me,” a familiar song to listeners of the Smooth Jazz Network.

Here is a review of the show filed by Chick: “It was a musical showcase that left the audience wanting more. The one-hour set went by too quickly. Spencer played many songs from Vagabond, with his band of three and sometimes four musicians. Spencer is as good a piano player as he is a singer-songwriter. He reminded me very much of Harry Connick Jr. and, on several ballads, even John Legend. He’s very energetic, engaging and humorous – a natural showman and performer.

“As Spencer got ready for his last song of the evening, up to the stage walks someone Spencer said was going to join them – none other than smooth jazz saxophonist and Smooth Jazz Network weekday host Dave Koz! Koz played with the band on the last song, and together they brought down the house.”

Chick met Spencer after the show and says she found him to be charming and humble, almost like someone who can’t believe he made it to Hollywood. “He definitely gave me that just-off-the-bus-from-Iowa feeling,” she says. “He was so grateful for each and every person that came out to see him.”

Chick even broke some news from her evening. “Don’t be surprised,” she says, “if you hear Spencer doing vocals on a Dave Koz album or song in the future.”
