Steely Dan Hints At A New CD; Donald Fagen Will Release A Solo Project First

Steely DanFor its upcoming two shows in Akron, Ohio, Steely Dan will perform two of its classic albums from start to finish: Aja on Nov. 16, and The Royal Scam on Nov. 17. But band leaders Donald Fagen and Walter Becker told the Cleveland Plain Dealer that they are also looking ahead to the future.

“Walter and I keep tossing around ideas for another Steely Dan album, but there’s nothing set yet,” Fagen told the newspaper. Fagen says he will begin working on another CD this spring to follow up 2006’s Morph the Cat, 1993’s Kamakiriad and 1982’s The Nightfly, the latter of which featured the smooth jazz hit “I.G.Y.”

Those three CDs were considered part of a trilogy, Fagen says.

“(But) I’m really glad I’m through with that. It was something I was sort of compelled to do, and I think I took that as far as it could go. This will be something lighter, just a one-off.”
