  • Nils' Alley Cat

In 2014, nine years after his massive radio single “Pacific Coast Highway” established him as one of contemporary urban jazz’s top artists and producers, Nils took an exciting look back on a decade of non-stop hit-making with the release of the compilation Jazz Gems: The Best of Nils – a collection one astute journalist dubbed “The Best of Contemporary Jazz in the 2000s.” Aside from taking stock of his extraordinary career, the popular compilation included only one new track – giving the prolific, Munich born, Los Angeles based guitarist and composer extra time to pen his most explosive and infectious tunes ever for his latest BAJA/TSR Records release Alley Cat. In addition to capturing a wide range of emotions on his electric (and sometimes acoustic) guitar, the 12 tracks showcase, more than ever before, Nils’ masterful skills as a producer and inventive sonic architect.

Like a guitar driven equivalent of keyboard great and producer Jeff Lorber, Nils’ success as creator of some of the genre’s most identifiable hits – including “Let’s Bounce,” “Ready to Play, “Catnap” and “Shake It,” – has led to his becoming a powerful behind the scenes force for many established and emerging artists. Working at his L.A. based studio, he has written songs and helmed tracks and full projects by saxophonist Reggie Codrington, guitarist Keith Andrews, pianists Al DeGregoris and David Hunt, Brian Simpson and most recently, “Harmony Park,” a track for multi-instrumentalist Nate Harasim’s #ShadesofNate featuring Dave Koz and mixed by Paul Brown.

Extending that spirit of collaboration to his latest solo project, Nils invites a wealth of dynamic musical cohorts to help create the magic of Alley Cat. In addition to his longtime core of Clydene Jackson (keyboards, vocals), percussionist Oliver C. Brown and bassists Reggie McBride and Darryl Williams, the guitarist incorporates more horns than usual, firing up the high energy hypnotic funk of “Milkshake” (which includes a chainsaw effect!) with saxophonist Eric Marienthal and trumpeter Johnny Britt. Britt and Codrington’s rising horns jazz and snazz up the buoyant, old school soul influenced title track “Alley Cat,” while Britt adds soulful trumpet harmonies on his own to the sly, easy funk flow of “Night Flyer” and the bright, plucky melody and simmering grooves of “Don’t Hold Back.”

“It was so much fun and very inspiring to work with all of these great musicians,” says Nils. “Alley Cat is a true labor of love, and they all came through the way great friends do when they’re in the moment, having a great time and open to spontaneity. Even for a producer who likes to play around a lot with electronic textures, nothing is better than playing alongside this caliber of musicians live. A lot of these tracks were recorded when the musicians would just come over, hang out and say they felt like playing. That fresh energy comes through and everyone who joined me did so because they love the music and share a strong working relationship with me.”

Nils new album Alley Cat is available now at mahjor retailers including Amazon.com.

  • Kenyon Carter’s “Game On” wins a Global Music Award

A pivotal album inspired by a life-changing experience, “Game On” is the apropos title of Kenyon Carter’s (www.KenyonCarter.com) album that was released Friday (August 14) by CurvePoint Media. The title track to his third release, which earned a silver medal last week for outstanding achievement from the Global Music Awards, features guitar great Chuck Loeb (Fourplay), a contemporary jazz heavyweight who trades ferocious licks with Carter’s spirited tenor horn.

This new album comes after the artist had his right arm crushed in a car crash that almost kept him out of music for good. Severe radial nerve damage left doctors wondering if Carter would ever regain full use of the appendage. Persisting patiently through eight months of daily rehab and endless hours dedicated to re-learning how to play the sax with the aid of a specially-designed therapy glove, Carter’s form and function gradually returned, but inside, he would never be the same again. The experience was a powerful wakeup call that the time to chase his dream was now and he has not looked back since.

Game On is available now at major retailers including amazon.com

  • Carol Duboc keeps her “Colored Glasses”

On Carol Duboc’s deeply personal 2013 release, “Smile,” the contemporary jazz singer-songwriter opened up in a way that she had never done so before, revealing the pain and heartache involved with dissolving her marriage while being the mother of a young daughter. She described writing the album with producer and jazz keyboards legend Jeff Lorber as therapeutic. Her therapy continues on “Colored Glasses,” a Gold Note Music ten-track disc written and produced by Duboc and Lorber set for release on September 18 and launched that evening with a Hollywood concert date that will be streamed online.

“Some people refuse to see the world as it really is or life as it is, and to be honest, I was so caught up in the hypnotic love that I didn’t see things as they really are either,” admitted Duboc, who titled the first single “Hypnotic.” “I think this album is going to surprise people. It’s about letting go completely and moving on emotionally. And it may be the funkiest solo record I’ve ever made.”

To mark the album’s release and celebrate coming through the other side of the relationship, Duboc will perform at the famed jazz joint the Baked Potato on the release date (Sept. 18), which will be streamed live on her website (www.CarolDuboc.com). Jeff Lorber, Jimmy Haslip and Michael Thompson are among the musicians from the album’s lineup already confirmed to be backing the singer that night.
