Happy Birthday Al Jarreau

Birthday wishes to seven-time Grammy winner and legendary singer Al Jarreau who celebrates today (March 12).  Born Alwin Lopez Jarreau in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he began singing when he was only four.  His early days in music included solo variety show performances and singing harmony with his brothers.  In the mid-60's, Al moved to San Francisco after obtaining his master's degree and worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor.  He continued singing in the local jazz clubs joining the George Duke Trio.  Al released his debut album We Got By in 1975 and received the first of his many awards, a German Grammy for Best New International Soloist.  In 1977 Jarreau released his album Look to the Rainbow and picked up his first Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance.  His first live album Al Jarreau and The Metropole Orkest Live was released in 2012 and received a Grammy nomination.  Al will be performing in Istanbul, Turkey on April 30 for the 2nd Annual International Jazz Day, presented by UNESCO and The Thelonious Monk Institute.  He'll be joining legends Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, George Duke, Dianne Reeves, Lee Ritenour, Hugh Masekela and many others to celebrate jazz and its power to communicate across the globe.
